Kids Learn Ice Fishing On Lake Harriet

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A new generation of kids were introduced to the sport of ice fishing Saturday on Lake Harriet in Minneapolis.

Along with learning how to bait the hook, the kids got to use sonar cameras and other gadgets to track the fish under the ice.

The ice fishing experience was organized by veteran Karl Erickson, who now works at Lake Harriet Community School.

"When I came home from Iraq in 2007, a friend took me out ice fishing with a Clam house, a Vexilar fish finder and a power auger and kind of hooked me on the sport," Erickson said. "I wanted to pay forward that first awesome experience that I had to the kids I work with every day."

More than 50 kids enjoyed the day out on the ice. A number of local businesses donated the fishing gear used Saturday.
