St. Paul K-9 Uses Nose To Help Lost Toddler

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A St. Paul canine officer is being praised for helping a little boy get home.

Officer Patrick Murphy and his K-9 partner, Sarik, have been together since 2009.

On Monday, Sarik helped a little boy find his way home. The barefoot toddler was found lost in a southern area of Como Park.

"I tried to ask him things like what's his mom's name, you know, phone number. He's a little guy, so naturally he didn't know that," Murphy said. "Then he started to cry when he realized he was completely lost."

After a half hour of searching, Murphy decided to use Sarik to see if he could sniff out the boy's home.

"We track all the time. What happened here is not uncommon, to use a dog to find somebody," Murphy said.

In this case, it was somebody's house. Sure enough, they found the boy's home five blocks away.

The boy had apparently gotten up and wandered out of the house. His young sister, who was watching him, did not know he had left.
