Neighbors Rescue Iowa Man From Burning Apartment Building

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say neighbors suppressed flames and pulled a man from his Cedar Rapids apartment moments after an explosion.

Cedar Rapids firefighters were dispatched a little after 4:20 p.m. Tuesday to the Hardwick Apartments, where they found the man being prepared for transport to an Iowa City hospital.

Neighbors say the man is in his 60s and has disabilities. One of the neighbors, Luke Snyder, says the man was sleeping in his bedroom when the explosion occurred and some of the ceiling material fell on him.

The neighbors say they used fire extinguishers to keep the flames at bay during the rescue.

The cause of the explosion is being investigated.
