International Falls Celebrates The Cold With Icebox Days

INTERNATIONAL FALLS, Minn. (AP) — It's January, and what better time to celebrate the frosty reputation of the self-proclaimed Nation's Icebox?

International Falls on the U.S-Canada border will hold its annual Icebox Days Jan. 15-18.

Smokey Bear Park will be decorated with snow sculptures. Among the events are redneck trivia, a can-crushing contest, a boot hockey tournament, a toilet seat toss and frozen turkey bowling.

The highlight is the 35th running of the Freeze Yer Gizzard Blizzard Run on Jan. 17. Participants from across the U.S. and Canada will take a 10K outdoor run where the motto is "Only the Bold Run the Cold."

In 34 years, the Gizzard Run has never been canceled. But it was shortened in 1982 when wind chills dropped to 72 degrees below zero.
