HS Football Fans Flock To Final Outdoor Prep Bowl

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Prep Bowl is taking place at TCF Bank Stadium this weekend. It is the last year teams will play their state title games outdoors.

The event will move back indoors after a two-year layoff next year. Teams will play at U.S. Bank Stadium like they did at the Metrodome.

The Prep Bowl kicked off with the 9-man championship game between the Underwood Rockets and the Grand Meadow Superlarks -- and fans were quick to explain just what a Superlark is.

"It's a very muscular bird," Grand Meadow fan Kaitlyn Hilton said.

Kickoff between the undefeated schools was at 10 a.m. Friday.

"I didn't dress at all for any game. I told my kid, I told him if they make it to state I'll fully dress up," Rick Hoeper Jr. said. "We're here. We're going to win it. I'm dressed."

And depending on where fans were sitting they may have had to throw on an extra layer or two. Grand Meadow fans sat in the shady side of The Bank.

"It's a little chilly but we want to cheer on our boys and have a good time," Grand Meadow fans Emma Grafe and Grace Hilton said.

That is also where you could find Superlark superfans Bev Minske and Diana Weiss.

"This is nothing. Last year was cold. This is nice," Minske and Weiss said.

A year ago it was just 24 degrees and there was three inches of snow on the ground. Friday was 45 degrees with no snow. It was even more comfortable for Underwood fans sitting in the sun.

The vendor known as Wonderful Wayne may have been the real winner by the end of the game. It was more pleasant than last year, but still cool enough to sell plenty of hot chocolate.

"I'm probably going to sell about 250 of them today," Wayne said.

At $6.50 a piece, Wayne will do a nice day of business.

It got warmer after this morning's 9-man title game, and it was even more comfortable out there in the late afternoon.

Grand Meadow defeated Underwood to win their third state title in a row.
