Hopkins Wins Class 4A State Title

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Amir Coffey scored 19 points, Vinnie Shahid added 13 and Hopkins beat Lakeville North 64-55 on Saturday night to win the Minnesota boys Class 4A state title.

Coffey — the prized University of Minnesota recruit — helped spark a 15-0 run in the second half that put the Royals (31-1) ahead for good. Up to that point, the Panthers had held the high-scoring Royals — who came into the state tournament averaging 92 points per game — in check for most of the night.

Fifth-seeded Lakeville North (26-6) was trying to complete an impressive run to its second 4A title in three years after eliminating previously unbeaten Osseo in the semifinals. The Panthers held Hopkins to a 23-all tie in the first half and led 42-37 with nine minutes left to play.

But Coffey and Xavier Johnson combined for 10 points during Hopkins' decisive run. Shahid scored nine points in the final five minutes to hold off Lakeville North's last gasp, and Hopkins won its ninth state title and first since 2011.
