Homeowner: Grill Mishap Sparked Brooklyn Center House Fire

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (WCCO) – Flames severely damaged a Brooklyn Center home Monday afternoon after a fire from an outdoor grill got out of control.

Fire officials said the family made it safely out of the home on 67th Avenue North, but that the house was a total loss.

As of writing, firefighters have the situation under control, but they're still working to put out the flames.

The homeowner, Madeleine Teko, said her husband was starting a charcoal grill on the back patio when lighter fluid got on the deck and started on fire. The flames quickly spread to the house.

She said the house is insured.

A plume of smoke from the fire could be seen for miles around Brooklyn Center.

Crews from Brooklyn Park and Robbinsdale assisted in battling the flames.
