Hodges Wants To Raise Mpls' Property Tax Levy By 3 Percent

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges wants to raise the city's property tax levy in next year's budget by more than 3 percent.

But she says taxes will actually drop for two-thirds of homeowners because the total amount is spread across more property owners.

The DFL mayor's budget includes investments in bridge repairs and affordable housing. She also wants to put money toward police body cameras and reforming the municipal criminal-justice program to reduce the negative impact on people of color.

Last year, Minneapolis' tax levy went up 2 percent. That's less than the mayor wanted.

The city's total budget was more than $1 billion. Most of that money went to the Public Works Department.
