Hockey Families Take Advantage Of Equipment Giveaway At Xcel Energy Center

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- In the State of Hockey: You still need helmets and pads to play -- and all that gear can get expensive.

That's why hockey families took advantage of an equipment giveaway Saturday. Young athletes tried on helmets at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Once they found what they wanted: They could take home a full set of donated gear for free.

With four kids in hockey, the Baker family says this is exactly what they needed. They have three kids starting hockey this season, including their youngest girl who's going to hit the ice for the first time.

"She's a brand new skater this year," mom Tristin Baker said. "So for her, to help find some equipment and help on the cost is super helpful."

The Minnesota Wild and the Herbs Brooks Foundation are among the sponsors that help make this program possible.
