Historic Minneapolis Diner Reaches Crowdfunding Goal

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A historic Minneapolis diner on the verge of closing now has the money it needs to stay open thanks to help from the public.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal reported the Band Box Diner was running on its last grill burner and it needed to be replaced. If it went out, so would the business.

Chef and owner Brad Ptacek started a Go Fund Me page hoping to raising $5,000 in order to buy a new grill.

According to the Go Fund Me page, the Band Box Diner has reached their goal and then some.

The page states the diner has raised $5,640, $640 more than their intended goal.

The Band Box Diner has been open since 1939 and was designated as a historic landmark in 2000. Legend has it that after its opening, the Band Box was a front for Minneapolis gangster Kid Cann.

Last year, Matt Brickman profiled the diner in a Guest Pass segment. (Watch the segment above.) He reported that the diner is also known for its cameo appearance at the start of the classic '90s film D2: The Mighty Ducks.
