Highway 12 Safety Improvements Set To Begin Next Week

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Drivers on Highway 12 will encounter lane closures nightly from the end of July to late August as crews begin construction on safety improvements to the highway.

Beginning July 20, traffic will be restricted to a single lane on Highway 12 at both junctions of County Road 92 in Independence as crews install turn lanes. The closures will take place Monday through Friday nights from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. The installation is scheduled to be finished by late August, according to Metro Public Affairs.

The stretch of the highway crews are focusing on is one of the deadliest in Minnesota. The state's Department of Transportation announced added safety measures for the highway in June.

In addition to the new turn lanes, a concrete median barrier will be installed between County Road 112 and County Road 6. Installation for the barrier will begin in the fall.
