1 Killed In Highway 12 Head-On Crash Near Independence

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – One person is dead after a crash on a west metro highway known to have a dangerous past.

It happened Friday afternoon on Highway 12 between Valley Road and Railroad Avenue in Independence.

Troopers say a westbound car crossed over the center lane and crashed head on with an eastbound semi.

In 2016, the Minnesota Department of Transportation closed a five-mile stretch on a different part of the highway to make safety improvements.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety reported 24 deaths within six years between Wayzata all the way to Wright County.

MnDOT is scheduled to begin making safety improvements to this part of the road in 2021.
