Body Of Missing Canoeist Recovered From BWCA Lake

HOVLAND, Minn. (AP) — Searchers have recovered the body of a missing man from a lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of northeastern Minnesota.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office says the body of 59-year-old Michael Hickey was discovered Wednesday in Pine Lake.

Searchers used sonar technology provided by neighboring St. Louis County to detect Hickey's body in about 80 feet of water.

Hickey was an experienced visitor to the BWCA. He left for a weekend fishing trip on Friday and did not show up for work on Monday.

Authorities found his truck at a boat landing and a partially submerged canoe registered to him. They also found canoe paddles and some of Hickey's personal items.

The cause of death is pending an autopsy.
