Hennepin County Sheriff: Stay Off Thin Ice

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- With temperatures much warmer than normal this week it may seem like common sense, but the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is urging people around the Twin Cities to stay off thin ice.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said with the warmer conditions, ice is melting rapidly this time of year on lakes across the Twin Cities. People walking, using recreational vehicles or cars and trucks, should all be avoiding thin ice.

Conditions are especially dangerous this time of year as we head towards spring with temperatures rising quickly. The ice isn't thick enough for vehicles, and the minimum for walking and group activities is about four inches.

Safety officials said at this point, it's best to just stay off the ice to avoid a dangerous situation.
