Hennepin Co. Sheriff's Office Urges Water Safety Over Holiday Weekend

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Fourth of July weekend means more people on Minnesota's lakes, so the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is urging water safety.

"Our message this 4th of July is simple, wear your life jacket. We want everyone to have a good time, but safety must be a top priority," said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek. "Please be aware of your surroundings and use good common sense so that everyone is able to have a fun and enjoyable weekend."

June's heavy rainfall means water levels on Minnesota's bodies of water remain extremely high, so Stanek encourages those who are planning to sightsee or be near fast-moving waters to wear life jackets – especially children.
