Kayak, Helicopter Deployed To Rescue Woman Stranded On Island With Broken Leg

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A kayak, a helicopter and an ambulance were needed Tuesday morning to rescue a woman who broke her leg in central Minnesota, becoming stranded on an island.

The Pine County Sheriff's Office says the woman broke her leg around 7:40 a.m. while walking on an island on the Kettle River between Sandstone and Hinckley. She missed a step and got her foot caught in a hole.

Emergency responders first hiked to the river and kayaked out to the island. They began treating the woman before a helicopter lifted her to a nearby field, where an ambulance was waiting.

The woman's journey ended at a local hospital, where the sheriff's office says she is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
