Spring Storm To Dump Heavy Snow On Southern Minnesota Wednesday

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Spring might officially be here, but winter has at least one more big punch on the way in the form of a March snowstorm.

Snow is expected in northern Minnesota on Tuesday, but a bigger storm is expected to hit the Twin Cities and southern Minnesota on Wednesday. It could give some areas their biggest snow totals of the year.

WCCO Meteorologist Chris Shaffer says the storm will start as rain over the Twin Cities just after midnight Wednesday. Falling temperatures throughout the day will change the moisture over to snow. The best bet for heavy snowfall is south of the Twin Cities near Rochester, Austin and the Iowa border. Shaffer says it will be a wet, heavy snow and the areas likely to get hit the hardest could see eight to 10 inches of snow. Winter Storm Warnings should be expected in southern Minnesota on Wednesday.

Snow, combined with strong winds could create hazardous travel conditions near Interstate 35 in southern Minnesota. Shaffer says the Twin Cities, depending on the storm track, could see a few inches or just a dusting.

We'll have a high in the upper 30s on Thursday before 40s return next weekend.
