Heavy Snow Expected During Monday Morning Commute
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Attention, early morning commuters: A fast-moving storm system is set to impact the Twin Cities area overnight into midday Monday. That might make for a messy morning commute.
A winter storm warning is in effect for the Twin Cities Metro until noon Monday. Organized snowfall will commence after 1 a.m. and will continue steadily until tapering by late-morning.
The speed of the system will work in favor of reducing accumulation potential, but the moisture content of the system will not; abundant moisture will cause the snow to be heavy, particularly during morning commute hours of 5 a.m. to 8 a.m.
In addition to heavy snowfall, breezy winds will contribute to greatly reduced visibilities, so those not off for President's Day will face a very tough commute. Expect accumulations of 4 to 6 inches of snowfall by midday with higher end totals across the east Metro.
Conditions improve dramatically through the afternoon for shoveling and snow-blowing with clearing skies, less wind and temperatures that will warm on the back-side of the system. Expect highs in the mid-30s.
