Guthrie Theater Ends Year With Surplus After Leadership Change

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Guthrie Theater is reporting a surplus for the fiscal year that saw the Minneapolis theater's first leadership change in 20 years.

At its annual meeting Monday, the Guthrie reported a surplus of $24,000 on a budget of $29 million for fiscal year 2014-15.

The Guthrie says the results indicate a strong overall financial health for the nonprofit theater.

Artistic director Joe Dowling stepped down last summer after leading the Guthrie for two decades. Dowling turned over control to Joseph Haj of PlayMakers Repertory Theatre in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The Guthrie says its budget for the last fiscal year expanded by $3.2 million, or 12 percent, from the previous year as earned revenue rose by 8 percent. Total attendance for the year grew by 6 percent.
