Gun Debate Primed To Heat Up Again At Legislature
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Call it Gun Day at the Minnesota Legislature.
A House panel is planning to discuss a handful of firearm-related proposals Thursday. They include bills that would legalize gun silencers and recognize gun permits from North Dakota.
Another bill would automatically allow gun permit owners to carry a firearm into the Capitol. Gun owners currently have to notify the state if they plan to bring a weapon inside.
The move to expand access is a big departure from the last time gun legislation heated up in Minnesota. Gun rights advocates packed the Capitol in 2013 as Democrats tried and failed to expand background checks after the mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.
Lawmakers last year banned gun possession by people subject to restraining orders or convicted of certain abuse crimes.
