MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Construction is set to get underway on a new memorial at the State Capitol which honors the family members of military veterans.

A groundbreaking for The Minnesota Military Family Tribute was held Wednesday in St. Paul.

Major General Larry Shellito, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs, says when a soldier is deployed, an entire family is deployed.

"The mother is sitting home, watching the news like she's never watched it before, wondering if her son or daughter is there," Shellito said.

The tribute is scheduled to be completed next June. According to Bill Popp, one of the planners of the tribute, it's the first of its kind in the country – and other states are taking notice.

WCCO Radio is proud to partner with the Minnesota Military Family Foundation on the project.
