Grand Jury: 2 Officers Justified In Using Deadly Force In Rest Stop Shooting

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. (AP) -- A Ramsey County grand jury has determined the use of deadly force was justified for two police officers who fatally shot a homicide suspect.

The officers killed 18-year-old Jonathon Dean Mar, of Kennewick, Washington, last December along Interstate 694 in Shoreview following a police chase. Mar was suspected of fatally shooting 23-year-old Matthew Maffei in the head at a rest stop in Maple Grove earlier in the day.

Sheriff's officials said Mar crashed his car in the interstate median and "brandished a weapon" before he was shot by a Brooklyn Center officer and a Hennepin County sheriff's deputy.

The grand jury on Wednesday determined there was no probable cause to charge either officer.
