Gov. Dayton To Visit Brainerd Lakes Area

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Gov. Mark Dayton plans to visit the Brainerd Lakes area on Friday to survey the damage caused by Sunday's severe thunderstorms.

The clean-up still continues after winds up to 80 miles per hour toppled trees and damaged properties. Some of the state's most popular resorts and campgrounds have shut down, causing many vacationers to make new plans.

Assessments are underway to see if the damage is enough to qualify for disaster relief funding from the state or federal government.

Confidence Learning Center, or Camp Confidence, was especially hit hard. The camp is where people with autism and other disabilities come to experience and learn about the outdoors.

Strong winds ripped the roof off of one the buildings at Madden's on Gull Lake. The resort was temporarily closed. On Thursday, the owners said that parts of the resort were ready to open, including the driving range and the Classic Grill restaurant.
