Gophers RB Brooks Named Big Ten Freshman Of The Week

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Despite a 40-35 loss at Iowa Saturday night, Gophers freshman running back Shannon Brooks was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday.

Brooks had 14 carries for 86 yards and a touchdown and threw a 42-yard touchdown on a trick play in the fourth quarter to keep the Gophers close. Both scores came in the last six minutes of the game. Brooks averaged more than six yards per carry on the night.

He also had three catches for 13 yards in the loss. It's the second weekly award of the season for Brooks, who was also named the Freshman of the Week back on Oct. 12.

The Gophers host Illinois at 11 a.m. Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium. It was also announced Monday that the Gophers' regular season finale against Wisconsin is set for 2:30 p.m. at TCF Bank Stadium on Nov. 28. Minnesota needs to beat Illinois and Wisconsin to become bowl-eligible.
