Gophers QB Streveler Earns Weekly Big Ten Honor

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Freshman quarterback Chris Streveler had a big game Saturday as the University of Minnesota football team beat San Jose State 24-7, and he received a weekly Big Ten honor Monday as a result.

Streveler, a redshirt freshman, got his first career start Saturday in place of the injured Mitch Leidner. Streveler ran 18 times for 161 yards and a touchdown to lead the Gophers to Saturday's victory. His short rushing touchdown before time expired in the first half gave Minnesota a 17-7 lead at the half. He was named the Co-Freshmen of the Week on Monday.

Streveler could get the start this week as the Gophers travel to Michigan to open Big Ten Conference play. Leidner missed Saturday's game with knee and foot injuries, and it's not known if he'll be healthy enough to play this week.

Streveler's 161 rushing yards were the third-most ever by a Gophers quarterback. It's his first Big Ten weekly award. The last Minnesota Freshman of the Week: Leidner after he ran for four touchdowns in last year's 43-24 win over San Jose State.
