Gophers Promote Sherels To LB Coach

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota coach Jerry Kill has promoted graduate assistant Mike Sherels to linebackers coach.

Kill made the announcement on Friday. Sherels joined the staff in 2011 as a special assistant and also served as an assistant recruiting coordinator last season. Sherels was a two-time captain during his playing career with the Golden Gophers, which spanned 2003-07.

Kill calls Sherels "a terrific on-field coach." Sherels is a native of Rochester. He is the only walk-on player ever to become a two-time captain for the Gophers.

Sherels says becoming a full-time assistant coach for his alma mater is "a dream come true."

Friday was a big day for the Sherels family, which also saw Mike's younger brother Marcus sign a contract to return as a punt returner and cornerback with the Minnesota Vikings.
