Gopher Punter Names Himself 'Holder Of The Year'

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A punter for the Minnesota Gophers got a lot of buzz online for crowning himself with a title of his own creation.

After the Big Ten snubbed Peter Mortell for the "Punter of the Year" honor, he took matters into his own sturdy hands Tuesday.

Mortell, who is well known on Twitter for his sarcastic and funny tweets, even caught the attention ESPN's "SportsCenter."

"You know what? He's right," host Scott Van Pelt said. "I might not know a whole lot about much, but I know high-quality holding -- and this is it."

Mortell -- who is from Green Bay, Wisconsin -- is a redshirt senior. His career average for yards per punt (43.1) makes him the second best in Gopher history.
