Gopher Legend Bob McNamara Laid To Rest

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- He just lived to make others feel good. That's the way most describe Gopher great Bob McNamara.

The legendary halfback and fundraiser died Sunday. He was considered one of the best football players to come through the University of Minnesota.

McNamara and his brother, Pinky, grew up with modest means in Hastings, Minn., but achieved big careers during and after their college days.

It was a who's who at the emotional funeral service Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. A huge crowd paid their respects to a man that touched so many.

Bud Grant, McNamara's long-time friend and teammate, was moved to tears while giving the eulogy.

Minnesota sports legend Sid Hartman said there will never be another man like McNamara.

"The university's never going to find a loyal guy like him, a fundraiser like him," Hartman said. "The guy never said a negative word."

McNamara was 82.
