'Give To The Max' Officials Hoping For Record Day

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – It's Give to Max Day around the Twin Cities, a day where local non-profit organizations get out and encourage you to give your time and money.

Now in its sixth year, it's the one day of the year when you can pick your favorite cause, donate to it and groups that get the most support get even more cash. The WCCO This Morning show was at Nicollet Station in downtown Minneapolis on Thursday talking with Metro Transit to see what they're doing for the all-day initiative.

Metro Transit is offering free rides, and through "Give-on-the-Go," workers will be out on Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis handing out "Give MN" cards if you're wearing green.

Last year, about 52,000 people participated in some way in Give to the Max Day. Last year in 24 hours, Minnesotans donated about $17 million to various charities. Throughout the whole campaign over five-plus years, Minnesotans have donated about $4 billion to various non-profit organizations.

Groups throughout the Twin Cities will be holding various events throughout the day to participate.

Helping Paws is another group participating Thursday. Pam Anderson with the group said they're hoping to raise $60,000 on Give to the Max Day for their service dogs that are currently in training.

Last year's number of $17 million was a record for one day, and officials with Give to the Max said they're hoping to break that Thursday. As of 9 a.m., more than $6 million had already been donated.
