Gas Leak Prompts Evacuations In St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- Authorities are on the scene of a gas leak after a line was struck near the new Lafayette Bridge in St. Paul.

The St. Paul Fire Department says a four inch gas line was hit by a backhoe at about 10 a.m. near the area of Fillmore and Lafayette. Fire officials said a building at 353 Fillmore was evacuated as a precaution, and crews with Xcel Energy are at the scene.

Authorities said a business at 291 Fillmore Avenue was also evacuated after winds shifted in the area.

The St. Paul Fire Department says it is working with Xcel Energy to locate the pipe and stop the leak. No injuries have been reported in connection with the incident.

Xcel Energy crews had the piped clamped and the leak was stopped by about noon. Authorities say the evacuation from the business at 293 Fillmore was lifted and the building is reoccupied.
