Fridley Man Charged With Slashing Fiancee's Throat

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Fridley man is charged with the attempted murder of his fiancée after cutting her throat Saturday morning, according to the Anoka County Attorney's Office.

James Mitchell Bruins-Ahlers, 22, was charged Tuesday with one count each of attempted second-degree murder, second-degree assault and domestic assault.

The charges stem from a brutal attack that happened Saturday. According to the criminal complaint, Bruins-Ahlers allegedly thought his girlfriend had cheated on him. He allegedly dragged her by her hair through a yard and then stomped on her ribs.

The victim ran away and tried to barricade herself in a bedroom, where she called someone to say Bruins-Ahlers was going to kill her. He then allegedly broke in, slammed her head into a door jam and began to cut her throat with a kitchen knife.

The victim suffered a cut that was four-inches wide and one-inch deep, as well as several defensive knife wounds to her hands.

Fridley Police arrived soon after and could hear who was later identified as Bruins-Ahlers screaming obscenities at someone. They then heard a gurgling sound, a gasp for air and then a woman scream "Oh God help me!"

As officers entered the residence, they saw the victim standing on a staircase, covered in blood. Bruins-Ahlers then came down the stair and held the knife to his throat, but was quickly detained and arrested.

His bail is set at $1.5 million. His next court appearance is set for Sept. 18.
