Former Mankato Football Player Making Improvements

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The former MSU-Mankato football player injured last month in an assault is continuing to make improvements.

According to his CaringBridge page, Isaac Kolstad has been making progressive improvements for the last few days, primarily on his left side.

Kolstad suffered severe head trauma earlier this month after allegedly being punched, hitting his head on the pavement and then being kicked in the head. The incident took place in downtown Mankato shortly after bar close.

Two men, including former Gophers football quarterback Philip Nelson, have each been charged with two felony counts of assault in connection with the incident.

Kolstad has had multiple surgeries to try and reduce the swelling on his brain. Physicians told his family that if he can follow a command, "he will be in the best place for a possible recovery," according to his CaringBridge page.

After being asked to give a thumbs up, Kolstad was able to follow the instruction and raised his left thumb in the air.

"Our strong guy has impressed his physicians once again," the update stated. "We can't help but know that the gathering of people, thoughts and constant prayers have kept Isaac strong and have assisted him in his recovery. It seems after the benefits that have occurred, Isaac has made the most improvement."
