Former All-Star, Future Hall Of Famer Frank Thomas Talks Home Run Derby

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Frank Thomas, otherwise known as the "The Big Hurt" is in town for the All-Star game on behalf of the Gillette Home Run Derby.

He told WCCO Radio's Steve Thompson and Eric Nelson that he's excited for the Hall of Fame ceremony, which is about two weeks away.

"I'm really stoked about it. I'm getting a little nervous," Thomas said.

He remembers playing in past All-Star games, and the first Home Run Derby in Minneapolis in 1985.

Back then it cost just $2, and it happened on one afternoon. Now, it's televised and he said there's a really great trophy.

As far as getting ready?

"There is a right way to practice home runs. About two weeks before, you should go to batting practice and put it in your mind that it's 3 and 0 count, and look to put a solid swing to put it out of the ball park," he said.
