Suspected Carjacker Arrested After PIT Maneuver On I-94 In Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Authorities say a suspected car thief was arrested Wednesday morning after leading officers on a chase that ended in Minneapolis with the man jumping out of the car, hopping the median and running across lanes of traffic on Interstate 94.

The chase started in Woodbury, where police say officers were called around 4 a.m. to the 2000 block of Lamplight Drive on a report of vehicle tampering. The first responding officer encountered the suspect vehicle and found that it was stolen. The officer tried to stop the car, but the vehicle sped off with a lone man behind the wheel.

Officers gave chase and were assisted by the Minnesota State Patrol, which used stop sticks to deflate the car's tires. Still, the man kept driving, leading officers along westbound Interstate 94 into Minneapolis.

Before the Lowry Tunnel, officers tapped the suspect car with a PIT maneuver, causing it to spin out of control. Before the car stopped moving, the man jumped out of the vehicle, hopped over the median and ran cross the interstate's westbound lanes, nearly being struck by on-coming traffic.

The officers chased the man on foot into the bushes around the Lowry Avenue intersection and apprehended him. According to police, emergency crews brought the man to Hennepin Healthcare for treatment of minor injuries.
