1 Dead, 1 Injured In Car Crash In Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say an Iowa man was killed and another was injured in an early morning car crash.

Des Moines police say they were called to the single vehicle crash around 2:40 a.m. Sunday. A passenger, 23-year-old Bill Saywonson of Des Moines, died at the scene. The car's driver 24-year-old Dawood Mekonnen Nega, was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police say the vehicle crashed into a traffic signal pole after losing control in an intersection just north of downtown Des Moines. Witnesses pulled both men from the vehicle after it appeared to be catching fire.

Police say they're investigating excessive speed and impaired driving as possible factors in the crash.
