State patrol investigating fatal crash on Highway 36 in Lake Elmo

LAKE ELMO, Minn. -- Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that killed a 17-year-old -- and injured two other teenagers -- east of the Twin Cities Thursday morning.

The Minnesota State Patrol said the one-vehicle crash occurred at around 3:30 a.m. on westbound Highway 36 at Lake Elmo Avenue North in Lake Elmo. The state patrol says the three occupants were in a 2008 Chevrolet Equinox traveling in a closed off construction zone where the vehicle hit a dirt pile and rolled.

According to the state patrol, the driver, a 17-year-old boy from Roseville, was ejected from the vehicle and killed in the crash. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The passengers -- a 16- and 17-year-old boy -- were taken to Regions Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They were both wearing seat belts.
