Family Of Man Committed For Killing Parents Objects To His Release

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A Minnesota man who killed his parents 16 years ago is expected to be released from a state hospital soon.

Richard Happ has been a resident at the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter since he was 30 years old.

He was diagnosed with schizophrenia after fatally stabbing his parents with a butcher knife in their Waconia home in March of 1999. He also tried to kill his brother.

He was committed as mentally ill and dangerous, but state social service officials say he has made progress.

Happ's family has repeatedly opposed his release, but a state panel has approved his move to a facility in West St. Paul as soon as next week.
