Armed man arrested after allegedly assaulting patient at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital, prompting brief lockdown

What prompted a lockdown at this Twin Cities hospital

Police in Edina, Minnesota, say a suspect is in custody after M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital went into a brief lockdown on Tuesday afternoon following reports of an armed person in the facility.

Police say officers were alerted that "a family member of a patient" was seen "armed with a firearm" around 3 p.m.

While searching for the suspect, officers learned he had left the area. He was later located in a different city, where he was arrested and booked into the Hennepin County Jail, pending felony second-degree assault charges, according to the Edina Police Department.

Investigators say the suspect got into a domestic dispute with a patient at the hospital, where he displayed a firearm before assaulting the patient.

Police recovered a firearm from the hospital.

"We are extremely grateful to the quick action of our staff and response by our law enforcement partners. We are actively gathering all facts to complete a full incident investigation with Edina Police," a spokesperson said for the hospital said.
