Edina Approves Controversial Youth Housing Project

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - The city of Edina decided late Wednesday night to fund a controversial multi-million dollar housing project.

The city council vote in favor of contributing half a million dollars toward a youth housing project.

The project -- called 66 West -- will be near Southdale Mall.

It will house young people who have been homeless.

"We believe that once this is up and running people will understand that this is an asset to the community," Anne Mavity, the director of new projects with Beacon Interfaith Housing, said. "It's not something to worry about."

Opponents have argued the project would drive up crime in the city.

Hennepin county pledged half a million dollars on Tuesday. The project is expected to cost $10 million.
