Mpls. Police: Teen Pedestrian Killed When Driver Flees Officers

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A driver is in custody after police say he fled officers and killed a teenage pedestrian Friday night in Minneapolis.

Police say officers saw a vehicle driving fast and erratically just before 10 p.m. near North Emerson and 36th avenues.

Officers tried to pull over the driver, who took off and hit a 16-year-old girl. She later died from her injuries at North Memorial Medical Center.

After hitting the girl, the driver bailed out of his moving car and ran away, as his car continued to move. His car hit several parked vehicles before coming to a stop.

He was soon arrested a block away while trying to carjack a vehicle with a family inside.

Police say the suspect had two felony arrest warrants out for him, and a handgun was found in his vehicle.

The suspect is being treated for his injuries at North Memorial, and will be booked into Hennepin County Jail when he is released.

His name, and the name of the teenage victim, has not been released.
