Man who crashed into Maple Grove garage dies days later

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — A home in Maple Grove caught fire Thursday morning after a driver crashed into the garage.

The crash happened on the 15100 block of 96th Avenue North just after 11 a.m., the Maple Grove Fire Department said.

The city's police department said the driver may have had a medical event prior to the crash. After hitting the garage, the vehicle ignited and the fire spread to the garage and house, officials said.

The driver was unconscious in the vehicle when first responders arrived. First attempts at extrication were unsuccessful because of the fire, but once it was under control, he was taken out and hospitalized. 

The driver, a 76-year-old man from Maple Grove, died at the hospital.

Two police officers were also hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

The city's fire and police departments, along with the State Fire Marshal and Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, are investigating.
