DNR: Zebra Mussel Larvae Located In Leech Lake

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources confirmed that zebra mussel larvae was found in Cass County's Leech Lake.

According to the DNR, the larvae, called veligers, were found in two separate locations. More than 30 veligers were found in Portage Bay on the northeast side, and over 40 veligers were found in Kabekona Bay on the western edge.

The two bays are located 17 miles apart. No veligers were found in between the two bays.

The veligers were collected as part of the DNR Fisheries' Lake Survey Program, which takes samples from 11 of Minnesota's largest lakes.

The DNR said no adult zebra mussels were found in the lake. However, the presence of larvae suggests that a reproducing population may be present.

If anyone comes across zebra mussels, or any other invasive species, contact an area DNR aquatic invasive species specialist.
