DFL Calls MN GOP's State Fair Shirt Plug 'Tasteless'

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota DFL is questioning the timing of a post from the Republican Party of Minnesota's Facebook page Wednesday morning.

The post, which has since been deleted, showed a picture of a shirt the party is presumably making available for purchase at the Minnesota State Fair.

The shirt reads "Obama can't ban these guns," with two arrows pointing out toward the sleeves of the shirt, indicating the slang term "guns" meaning exposed arms.

Minnesota DFL chair Ken Martin claims the timing of the Facebook post was "tasteless." Earlier Wednesday, news broke from Virginia as a reporter and photojournalist for WDBJ-TV were shot to death on live TV. Authorities say the man they suspect shot them was a disgruntled former employee of the station.

"Today the country is reeling from the news that a reporter and cameraman were shot to death on live television in Virginia. The Minnesota GOP's response? A tasteless plug for a t-shirt they'll be selling at the Minnesota State Fair," Martin said. "The tragedy that happened today is an opportunity for thoughtful discussion, not an opportunity to market a t-shirt. The Minnesota DFL Party's sympathies go out to all families who are victims of gun violence."
