Despite Record-Breaking Crowd, Very Few Arrests For Zombie Pub Crawl

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The undead took over downtown Minneapolis this past weekend in record numbers.

Minneapolis police estimate more than 35,000 people showed up to drink and party at the annual Zombie Pub Crawl. The crowd was so big it broke a Guinness World record for the most people dressed as zombies.

Paige Runyon, a server at The Look Café, was working Saturday night.

"Come 7 o'clock, I didn't think I would be able to cross the street. It was insane. Just zombies," Runyon said.

The walking dead, thousands of them, came ready to party during the 10th annual zombie pub crawl.

"It was crazy, just bodies everywhere," Runyon said.

On Monday, there were marks of the weekend revelry all over the warehouse district. Parts of the three block stretch had the look of a crime scene with fake splattered blood. But police had little crime to deal with.

"It went beautifully. It really did," Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder said.

Despite a crowd of more than 35,000 people, officers only made nine arrests.

"We're not talking gross misdemeanors or felonies, just nine instances where people couldn't be corralled in and put on the right path," Elder said.

Police credit extra planning and their approach to the low arrest count.

"People are down to celebrate, have fun and enjoy themselves. So, the mantra of the police department was fabulous, make it happen, as long as people are doing it responsibly," Elder said.

Elder said he couldn't remember any major problems with the zombie pub crawl in its 10-year history.
