Descendant Of Triple Crown Winner Secretariat Births Twins, Treated At UMN Center

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A descendant of the world-famous, Triple-Crown-winning racehorse Secretariat gave birth to twins last month and is being treated for complications at the University of Minnesota's Veterinary Medical Center.

The mare, 20-year-old Babe, is the great-great grandaughter of Secretariat. She gave birth to twin foals on May 15 and lost her ability to stand shortly thereafter after developing a neurological condition.

She's been at the VMC since June 2 in a sling that helps her stand and allows her to nurse the two foals -- a mare named Grace and a colt named King.

According to experts at the University's Veterinary Center, twins are an extremely rare event in horses, and fewer than 1 percent have successful births.
