BCA Identifies deputies who fatally shot Jordyn Hansen in Otsego
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Authorities have identified the four deputies involved in Sunday's fatal shooting of a man in the northwest metro who was in the midst of an apparent mental health crisis.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension says two members of the Wright County Sheriff's Office – Sgt. Jeffrey McMackins and Deputy Leland Wilkinson – fired their handguns, killing 21-year-old Jordyn John Hansen in Otsego.
The sheriff's office reported that Hansen was "having mental health challenges" and "physically threatened [the deputies] with a knife" before he was fatally shot.
Just before 1 a.m., deputies responded to the 12000 block of 72nd Court Northeast. They spoke with Hansen, who allegedly was threatening to harm his family and himself.
Hansen agreed to be evaluated at a hospital, but before the ambulance arrived, he "ran into the kitchen and grabbed a knife," the sheriff's office said, before fleeing into the neighborhood.
Deputies found Hansen in a backyard on Martin Farms Avenue Northeast and 72nd Street Northeast. The other two deputies – Patrick Mabusth and Mark Voss – used their stun guns on Hansen, but were unsuccessful in subduing him.
The BCA says squad car video captured shows Hansen "running towards Deputy Wilkinson," with a knife in his hand. Wilkinson then falls backwards "as he fires his department handgun." McMackins and Voss are then seen giving Hansen medical aid. Hansen was taken to North Memorial Health Hospital, where he died.
Wright County deputies don't wear body cameras, and squad car cameras only captured part of the deadly encounter. The BCA will release that footage at a later date. The investigation is still in progress.
