Dayton Has Successful Lower Back Surgery At Mayo Clinic

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton has undergone elective lower back surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Dayton's office says the procedure lasted about three hours Monday and was successful. The 68-year-old governor is said to be resting comfortably at Mayo.

The governor's office says the procedure is similar to one Dayton underwent three years ago, which fused two vertebrae in his lower back. That surgery helped improved the strength and stability in his legs.

In a statement, Dayton says he looks forward to a full recovery, as he experienced before.

Dayton expects to resume his regular schedule next week.
