After Clark Decision, Dayton Focused On Tackling Disparities

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Following the decision in the fatal police shooting of Jamar Clark, Gov. Mark Dayton said that moving forward Minnesota lawmakers should work towards laws that address racial disparities.

"I want the Legislature to consider and improve upon and pass my financial package for equity," he said on Thursday. "[W]e need to rebuild lives and communities, improve lives and improve communities...that's my focus."

Recently, Dayton proposed millions in spending on job and education programs to help the state's black community.

On Wednesday, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced that his office would not charge two white officers in the killing of 24-year-old Clark last year. He said DNA evidence corroborated the officers' claims that Clark was not in handcuffs and grabbed one of their guns during a struggle.

Dayton was among the first people to see videos from the Nov. 15 shooting. He says he doesn't have the authority to evaluate the evidence.
