Dalai Lama Visits Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Dalai Lama has observed Tibetan New Year celebrations outside India for the first time since going into exile more than 50 years ago.
About 3,000 Tibetan-Americans from across the country packed an auditorium Sunday morning at Augsburg College in Minneapolis to celebrate the holiday with the Buddhist spiritual leader. He spoke at Macalester College in St. Paul on Sunday afternoon.
The Dalai Lama also spoke at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum in Minneapolis Saturday. He said the materialistic culture of modern society has caused humans' good qualities to go dormant. He said ethics and human values need to be taught in school because the education system is oriented toward material values.
The Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. He last visited the Twin Cities in 2011.
