Dakota County Hosts Basketball Benefit For Fallen Police Officers
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Families of fallen police officers will benefit from a basketball tournament in Dakota County Saturday.
This year the family of St. Paul Officer Josh Lynaugh is benefiting from the game.
According to the Pioneer Press, Lynaugh suffered a heart attack in early February after an on-duty-foot chase.
Lynaugh's father said the family is also going to take part in an upcoming ceremony in Washington D.C.
The rest of the proceeds from this year's benefit are going to the Minnesota chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors, or COPS.
It's a group of survivors helping survivors.
"Typically what we've done for families is, for an officer that's killed, we would donate all the money to that officer's family," Dakota County Sheriff's Office's Booker Hodges said.
More than $5,000 was raised in the past three tournaments.
That money helped the families of Mahnomen County Deputy Chris Dewey, Lake City Officer Shawn Schneider and Cold Spring Officer Tom Decker.
